Oman lies on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The languages are Arabic and English. The Al Hajar Mountains rise straight up behind the coast, with villages built into the cliffs and roads climbing to viewpoints two thousand meters above the sea. A few hours south the golden dunes of the Wahiba Sands begin, where what people remember most is the silence. In between lie quiet bays, palm oases and long empty beaches. Old and new run alongside each other here, and hospitality is taken seriously: wherever you go, coffee and dates appear.
